Sherwood Hotel Queenstown

I was traveling alone for just one night stopover in New Zealand. I chose Sherwood for its design elements, community feel and the proximity to the airport, nature and the city center.

Even the smallest rooms are a generous size, boasting kitchens, daybeds, and views over the mountains and Lake Wakatipu. There’s a sense of space and comfort combined with moody industrial fixtures and chunky metal furniture. Local artisans are featured throughout – commissioned artwork, local merino blankets, recycled kilim rugs for curtains and pillows, and local timber beds are in each room.  I felt as though I had walked into a friend’s cabin as nothing was overdone, yet touches felt personal and there was a feeling of immediate comfort.

Sherwood was once part of a chain of 1980’s mock-Tudor motor inns. The original façade remains, while much of the interior has been updated with sustainability features and design elements that create the feeling of an inviting cabin away from home. A vegetable garden, yoga studio, fire pit, beautiful restaurant with communal tables, and an intimate space for live music all provide a warm welcome to for travelers and locals alike.

Surrounded by majestic mountains and set on the shores of crystal clear Lake Wakatipu, the natural beauty of the region is remarkable. The backdrop gives way to a holiday for those seeking adventure, well-being, culinary experiences, or vineyard hopping. As a nature lover, I most enjoyed biking around the lakes and taking in the stunning sights. The experiences can be seasonal so plan accordingly!
