An outdoor enthusiast’s alpine escape for any season.

Absolute Highlight

Taking in the astonishingly blue Lake Tahoe on a solo morning hike, seconded only by the wholesomeness of campfire s’mores.

What took you there?

I went to Lake Tahoe with my husband during quarantine in Los Angeles. During this time, I am always looking for destinations that have an incredible outdoor offering, and Tahoe is the epitome of a fresh air activity town, with a variety of options in any season. I went over the summer, and am excited to return in the snowy months.

What was your room like?

My room was a good size, as is common with recently renovated motels – a category more popular than ever in the US. We had a double queen room, which was the only available room when we booked. Two handcrafted beds, great pillows and linens were a welcomed sight after a 7 hour drive from Santa Monica. The room had a raw wood sink and storage area, with Malin + Goetz products, and a separate bathroom. The look was rustic and hip, with a mid-century modern bent.

What about the venue

The hotel is absolutely set up for community interaction. Everyone there must feel as though they found the best gem in the area, with an easy cool air about the many communal areas, so people are drawn together by the simple fact that they too found the Coachman Hotel. The decor is not only welcoming, it feels like Tahoe. Collaborating with American artisans, Coachman Tahoe set out with the intention of creating a ‘sense of community while paying tribute to the beauty of the landscape and the history of the property.’ The bar that goes from espresso to happy hour, the complimentary s’mores, and pool with the year round hot tub all create a place that is so welcoming, it almost becomes difficult to leave for Tahoe’s best attractions.

Tell us about the destination

Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite destinations in the US. This setting has something for everyone, in every season. I visited Coachman in the summer and enjoyed beaches, hikes, and the option of water sports. My hike in particular was one for the ages. I drove along winding roads with dramatic cliffs on both sides to reach the destination, Cascade Falls. Completely afraid to look any direction but forward while driving, I knew I was in for a treat, and was ultimately far from disappointed. The hike is through forest and opens up to a stunning view of a lake and stone falls. I was alone and just sat taking in the vista for ages, feeling so one with that moment.  In the winter, people are drawn to the world class ski slopes and then, of course, you have fall foliage and spring blooms. The casinos are ready for those interested in trying their luck and plenty of food options are around the lake as well.

Who did you meet there?

I met other couples who drove in from LA with dogs around the campfire while roasting s’mores. Dogs and s’mores always spark conversation!

Surrounding Activities

Ski, Hike & Mountain Bike

How you hit the slopes will vary by season, but it’s a must do on any Tahoe trip. Heavenly Mountain’s chair lift is a walk away from Coachman and hikes abound

Heavenly Ski Resort

Beach & Boat

You are a five minute walk to Lakeside Beach, which is private, and has a marina offering jet skis, boats, kayaks and SUP in warmer months. The hotel will give you day passes, but many casinos seem to give access as well, so it does get crowded. I preferred quieter neighboring beaches, and if you have time, drive around the lake and visit a few.

Try your luck at the casinos

Coachman is in California, but you’re walking distance to Lake Tahoe’s Nevada casinos, including Harrah’s, Harvey’s, Hard Rock and Montbleu. Most people at Coachman are there for the outdoors, but the casinos are definitely a draw for many.
