Agua De Luna Boutique Hotel

After soaking up the energy of Sayulita, we wanted to spend our last night in the quieter, quaint neighbouring beach village of San Pancho. I discovered the new Agua De Luna Boutique Hotel while searching online for a serene and understated, affordable luxury place to stay. Agua De Luna exceeded our expectations.

Off to a good start from the moment we checked in, Marcus informed me that he had upgraded us from a Premier to a Luxury Suite. Each room is named after an element of nature, and just around the corner from the lush hanging green wall was our room, the Manglar (Mangrove) Suite. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the minibar, including a beautiful bottle of local chardonnay was complimentary!

Each suite is uniquely decorated, but all exude coastal minimal bohemian style. Our room was open plan, accentuated by indoor plants, macrame wall hangings and earthy tones throughout… My favourite feature was the wicker hanging egg chair on our balcony, looking out over the pool.

Conceived by a young family from Guadalajara who wanted to create a home away from home in San Pancho, this home evolved into the Agua De Luna, the adults-only design hotel which opened its doors in August 2020. 

Agua de Luna is the place to zen out, and perfectly infuses minimal beach luxury style with being one with nature. The ground floor offers a relaxing, shaded pool to relax in, surrounded by water features and tropical plants (if you’re lucky you may even spot an Iguana!). 

The next two levels offer 15 artisanal suites, each named after the natural elements of San Pancho (Earth, Sand, Rain, Pelicans, Breeze, Coral, Beach, Mangrove, Tropic, Water, Coconuts, Lighthouse, Palm Trees, Coast and Moon). The rooftop offers two jacuzzis where you can watch the sun set over San Pancho. 

You can also pop down to the onsite Cafe Amaryya for a quick breakfast bite, coffee or smoothie.

San Pancho (also known as San Francisco) has a laid back vibe and attracts a slightly older, more refined crowd than its sister town Sayulita. Celebrated for its killer sunsets and surf breaks, it’s a great option for those wanting to take in the natural beauty of Nayarit. 

During the day there are plenty of stylish boutiques to peruse… and be sure to head to the beach for sunset followed by an alfresco dinner where you can enjoy the live music in the streets, topped off with a good night’s rest (the town goes to bed by midnight). 

We chatted with a Canadian couple in the jacuzzi, who we later spotted napping on the rooftop sofas with their suitcases while waiting for their room to be ready.  The following morning when we checked out, we met another couple from the UK who we shared the taxi ride to the airport with – both couples raved about their stay at Agua De Luna.
